August 27, 2010
We’ve always thought it would be cool to have an alias. You know—some off-the-wall name you’d use to book hotel rooms, become a famous groupie, or give to grenades when they hit on you at bars. A friend of ours has a drunk persona called “Susan,” who was up for anything (in her real life, she was more subdued). But Susan—wow—she was totally train-wrecky. (Obviously, that girl needed to cut loose… without a gallon of tequila to get her there.)
Anyhoo. We are still totally sold on the alias idea, and every once in a while a genius name suddenly comes to us. This morning at 3 a.m., we woke up with this in our heads: “Sticky Ellison.” It kind of sounds like the name of a bass player in a jam band, but we’re into it. After all, everybody needs an alter ego—even if it’s just for ordering takeout. |

If You Build It, They Will Come
We’ve seen a lot of shoe stores come and go in this town. Something about Portland… footwear boutiques have a tough time surviving, and we have no clue why. Everyone loves shoes—and we all need them. (Right?) So why do we have to lament the passing of one store, and then another?
Wipe those tears away, ladies and gents, because Manifesto has come to Mississippi Avenue. It’s a stylish yet unpretentious space that will surely become your next go-to for cute shoes. With favorites like Jeffrey Campbell, Biviel, Coclico, Faryl Robin and Miz Mooz (in a variety of price points), plus some hot numbers from Vol de Nuit, J Shoes and Serve and be Served (brands we’ve never heard of!), and an array of must-have boots (including a rad selection of Frye’s), Manifesto may be the answer to our shoe-lovin’ prayers. There’s also a sweet selection of hats, handbags and jewelry, and more shoes, boots, hats and accessories for men.
Do your part, Portland: buy a pair of shoes at Manifesto! Consider it your stylish civic duty.

Way to Shop
Maybe you’ve figured it out by now: We love to shop. And we really love to shop when we know that the amazing little treasure we’re bringing home is helping to improve the life of the artisan who created it. Shopping and saving the world? Yes, please.
Banyan Tree is a fair-trade store, newly opened in the Mercy Corps Building. This non-profit boutique offers amazing jewelry, beautiful home décor, music, and colorful accessories from South America, Central America, Africa and Asia. We especially fell in love with a gorgeous pair of earrings handmade in Peru from butterfly wings. The wings are harvested after the end of the butterfly’s natural life. How crazy-cool is that? We also ogled a beautiful wine tower (wine tower?!?! Hello. we.need.this.in.our.life) made from salvaged tropical Indonesian wood. Amazing.
Banyan Tree’s grand opening is this weekend, and kicks off with a Friday presentation on organic olive oil. We hear there will also be a Saturday chocolate-tasting. Shopping, saving the world and chocolate? Sounds like a fair trade to us.

Eat, Eat, Love
Food is more than just sustenance—it’s a way of life. And the food that makes us happiest (other than sushi) is baba ghanouj. We’ve had it at every Middle Eastern restaurant from here to Grants Pass, and we keep coming back to one place to get our fix.
It’s Nicholas, baby! They added a new location on NE Broadway (into the old Arabian Breeze spot), with like three times the seating of their Grand Avenue location. The décor is hilariously hokey, which kind of adds to the fun you’ll have ripping into the ginormous pita that comes (literally) hot out of the oven and to your table. So yes, we had the baba ghanouj, and it was glorious—eggplanty, garlicky, creamy. Get it as a “side” to a sandwich combo ($9.25 for a giant sandwich, a large portion of salad and a generous baba or hummous)—you won’t be hungry again for a week.
If you’re not in the mood to gorge yourself, try the mezze or the Chicken Kebab Salad. Oh, shoot. Just talking about Nicholas makes us want to go back. Now.

Go Zingy
Since we don’t have any vacations planned, and Portland’s winter weather means we’ll be spending more time staring at the same four walls, we’ve got to do something to add some interest—some zing—to our abode.
This Marimekko wallpaper is just the ticket. We’ve been obsessed with Marimekko fabrics since the 70s (Mom! Why did you toss that comforter???), so the chance to revisit this classic design is like giving us décor-crack. We absolutely need this…

Take Me Back
Our Aunt Jennie knitted the itchiest sweaters for us when we were tots. We loved them (a dark-purple nubby cardigan; a cream-colored Fair Isle with mohair), but the best part were the “With love, Jennie” tags she sewed in.
The Ohio Knitting Mills Knitting Book brings us back—way back. With 26 vintage patterns, taken straight from the OKM archives spanning the 40s to the 70s, knitters of all levels can whip up all-American classics. Aunt Jennie would be proud.

Tis the Season
It’s wedding season, and even though people have registries, we like to go off the grid when giving gifts. It can be dangerous to veer away from what you know a couple wants (see: Paintings of Pugs; never an appropriate gift), but an arty gift that’s practical can still be universally appreciated.
This Saikai Pitcher (available at Relish) is so lovely, so mod, and so useful. And you don’t have to tie the knot to snag one for yourself.
