  PORTLAND PICKS
life + style to you: every Friday
August 28th, 2009

It's 6:00 on Sunday night, we're two glasses deep into a bottle of cheap Zin, home alone, and watching "I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant." Sigh. Just last week we were swapping bon mots at a media dinner and the next night, sharing a flaming skewer of filet downtown with good friends. While wearing dresses. And lipstick. And now here we are. Home alone with the pugs. In our pajamas and the "comfy bra." Please... don't tell anyone. We have a rep to protect.

But do feel free to spread the word about the Heavenly Bed-making Competition we're participating in this coming Monday, Aug. 31, at Pioneer Courthouse Square, from 11 am–1 pm. It celebrates the 10th anniversary of The Westin’s Heavenly Beds, and proceeds benefit the Raphael House of Portland, Bradley-Angle House, and The Salvation Army White Shield Center. Watch our editor-in-chief make beds for charity with local media personalities, and the cherry on the cake? There will be fabulous prizes that attendees can win (that means you)! So be there, show your support, and if you're lucky, you might leave with something absolutely gorgeous to adorn your own bed.

One more thing: This week we’re sharing a few key Back to School ideas for you and the kiddos. Enjoy!

Upscale Experience, Resale Prices

When we were kids, our mom bought Keds in bulk because she couldn’t bear to spend more than $15 on our shoes. We grew too quickly! If only she had known about Hoot-n-Annie Children's New and Resale Boutique. Their high inventory standards and family-friendly policies make shopping fun in an organized and inviting atmosphere.

The new owners have made some fantastic changes—now you’ll find children’s clothing in sizes preemie–10, tons of fall/winter items (including Halloween costumes!), and “new with tag” items (great shower and birthday gifts!). Also, they now do consignment on baby gear like swings, slings, bouncers, car seats, etc., so you can swap and shop (environmentally friendly!). Hooray for Hoot-n-Annie.

What the Kids Are Wearing

We’re ready to channel Stevie Nicks this fall, with all the boho looks we’re seeing. But we need that rocker edge so we don’t look like groupies at a Joan Baez show. What’s a fashionable girl to do?

Check out these amazing earrings by Lydia Yost. Made with real feathers, and starting at just $25, they’ll send you back to school in style—or rock a board meeting like nobody’s biz! Available at Pop-Up Shoppe on NW 23rd, Pin-Me Apparel on N. Mississippi Ave., and Icon Tattoo on N. Russell St.

Captain Night-Night

What’s the best way to ensure success in school? With a good night’s sleep and a good breakfast. We can’t help you with the latter, but when Superman is your sleepover buddy you’re bound to have happy dreams.

kittencamaro’s Vintage Superman Print Pillow has got to be one of the cutest things we’ve ever seen. Whether he’s pumping you up for a spelling test, getting you psyched for a mid-term or energizing your TPS reports, there’s no man we’d rather have tucking us in.

Fun and Function

We carried an ugly—ugly—clear plastic pouch in our backpacks to hold our school supplies. It also had the most useless zipper that would inevitably break in three days, and ink stains and pencil ash made it black by the end of the first week. Yuck.

Hooray for Camp Smartypants and their ZigZag Tie-Die Pouches. Perfect for pencils (or Blackberries), they’re adorable and made of durable cotton canvas. (We’re snapping them up ourselves to corral the lip glosses in our handbags!)

  Event of the Week:

Oregon State Fair

Prepare for nostalgia—the Oregon State Fair is too big to miss! It’s also the year’s biggest birthday party (our little Oregon is 150!) with special programming to celebrate the sesquicentennial. (And don’t ask us to spell that again.) With two stages of live entertainment (tonight is Pink Martini!) on 11 nights, NPRA Rodeo Finals and an after-party with country star Aaron Tippen, helicopter rides, adorable baby animals, a Sea Lion encounter, tempting fair food, and of course insane amusement rides, it’s a recipe for big fun.
