Portland Picks’ Mother’s & Father’s Day Gift Guide

There aren’t enough ways to say “thank you, Mom and Dad” for all the gifts they have given us. All those years spent shaping us into decent human beings…all those times they said “no” for our own good when we wanted to hear “yes”…all the love and support they gave us through school plays and SATs…all those times they told us we were pretty and our braces were a fashion statement and no, we didn’t have the fattest thighs in junior high…thank you, Mom and Dad. And here’s to all the new moms and dads out there—those who are just beginning the saga of parenthood. To them we say, good luck!

To honor them, we bring you lots of fun gift ideas for moms and dads of all ages and levels of life-experience. Have fun choosing something super-special—whether it’s for your mom or dad, or you’re the mom or dad!

Owl Be Watching You

You could never see our grandma’s bathroom sink—it was always covered over by toiletries, perfumes and little soaps. Our mom has the same affliction, so we feed her beast at cheeky b with treasures like the Owl Soap from Gianna Rose (avian-free styles are also stocked). The wise owl perches on a porcelain leaf dish, and is nestled in a stylish gift box…it’s 100% vegetable-based, triple-milled, and creamy. For Father’s Day, cheeky b has a tempting selection of J. Fold laptop bags & wallets. Perfect!

Wow, You Look Amazing!

There’s no shame in being stuck in a fashion rut, but nobody has to be there forever. If mom’s still rockin pantsuits from the 70s, Units from the 80s, or CP Shades baggies from the 90s, it’s time to get her help. Inspire Style Coaching’s Mother’s Day Special will bring mom into 2007. We love the Mother/Daughter Special (for girlfriends and sisters, too)! You’ll each learn about your shape, best looks, and how to shop together. Get her a gift certificate today and let the fabulousness begin!

Fair Trade for Mom

Just because we’re shopping for a Hallmark Holiday doesn’t mean we have to give up our values…look to Bambootique’s online fair-trade store for fab little gifties from countries like Nepal, Indonesia, Thailand, Honduras, Guatemala and Cambodia…unique and exotic items that not only tell Mom you love her, but help foster improvements in the lives of women and children in other countries. It’s a festival of do-goodery, and the products (handbags, jewelry, candles, silk scarves and paper products) are truly fantastic.

We Want It All for Ourselves

Sometimes we have so much fun shopping for gifts that we often leave a store with an armload of goodies for ourselves, and nothing for our intended. This is always a problem at Butterscotch. From fabulous Pear Body Care products by Dani (made in Bend, OR!) to Matt and Nat handbags and Voluspa candles, to cards, stationery, tea and home-goods, they make it tough to be generous with anyone but us! The jewelry alone is enough to tempt us…but we promise, next time, we’ll buy something for Mom.

Mom’s Body is a Temple

At least it will be, for three hours. Honestly, once we heard about the Divine Beauty Temple Treatment by Brenda Carolan of The Healing Space, we knew it was special. It’s three hours of incredible pampering to leave the skin velvety smooth and lusciously divine. What mom doesn’t deserve this? Plus, for the entire month of May it’s $165 (regularly $215.) Small Things Make Big Impressions

We have lots of friends who have A) recently had babies, or B) are currently PG. We want to find a unique gift for each one of them, something that’s a keepsake, but not at keepsake prices. We finally settled on a necklace for each of them from Small Things Designs. Each one is handmade right here in Portland, with a lovely array of designs and colors to match everyone’s personality. And oh, it’s tough not to shop for ourselves! We love the bee necklace, the deco poppy ring…sigh!

Daddy Loves Design

We never ever get our husband anything he likes, so holidays are always touch-and-go for us. So we decided to rely on someone’s else’s taste…specifically, Canoe’s. Their offerings vary from supersleek practical items (see the Spider Vacuum Flask, designed in Germany), to little black books of a different sort (like One Year of White Pages, designed in Italy, which is a clever set of 12 blank booklets designed to capture Dad’s thoughts as he commits them to paper.) Canoe would never steer us wrong!

Make Mine a Memory

Our parents have photos from our childhood where our heads are tiny specks, dwarfed by scenery. And frankly, we don’t know if that was intentional or not… Bottom line? You can do better. Treat someone in your life—your parents, grandparents, yourself, or friends with children—to a splendid photograph or two by Laura McGraw Photography. She has the loveliest touch with portraits of newborns and young children, and can even make them into custom announcements and invitations! Truly, memories in the making.
